Dogged determination By Ken Kesey One of my all-time enjoyable reads was "Sometimes A Great Notion" by Ken Kesey. Ken was also the author of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". Several storylines support book but the main theme was the self-reliance of a logging family in Oregon. The story unfolds during a labor strike by workers in the local loggers union. The protagonist family of loggers do not belong to the union. They never asked for anything from the union, and never got anything from the union. Now the union wants their cooperation to help pressure the anti-union forces to settle the strike in favor of the union workers. The severed arm twisting in the breeze while hung from the flagpole, with all but the middle finger tied down, sets the tone for the feelings of our protagonists.
